Cellular Resistance to Infection
The mouse was found to be natively susceptible to Listeria monocytogenes. Its susceptibility was attributed to the capacity of the organism to survive and multiplying in host macrophages. During the first 3 days of a primary infection the bacterial populations of spleen and liver were found to increase at a constant rate. On the 4th day of infection the host became hypersensitive to Listeria an...
متن کاملCellular resistance to arbovirus infection.
When an arbovirus enters an arthropod in an infected blood meal, several mechanisms may interact to affect its life cycle and ultimate transmissibility. Intrinsic absolute failure in the establishment of infection must be contrasted with infection that is successfully established but is variably modulated in its viral yield throughout the vector's life-span. Degrees of vertebrate host resistanc...
متن کاملResistance to cellular HIV infection
Infection with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) remains a major cause of premature death worldwide. In order to enter and infect immune cells, HIV-1 binds to cell surface receptors including the CCR5 chemokine receptor (Fig. 1A). A welldescribed functional polymorphism in the CCR5 gene comprises a 32-bp deletion (called CCR532) which results in a lack of the last three transmembrane domai...
متن کاملCellular responses to enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection.
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), first described in the 1940's and 1950's, remain an important cause of severe infantile diarrhoea in many parts of the developing world. EPEC do not produce enterotoxins and are not invasive; instead their virulence depends upon exploitation of host cell signalling pathways and the host cell cytoskeleton both as a means of colonizing mucosal surfaces of...
متن کاملCellular Immunity in Vaccinia Infection of Mice
Rabbit anti-mouse thymocyte serum suppressed host cell-mediated responsiveness to intravenously administered vaccinia virus, thereby augmenting the morbidity and mortality of this infection. It did not affect either humoral antibody or interferon production in response to vaccinia virus. No effects were noted on primary or secondary immunity to intracerebral virus inoculation.
